The particle physics group at TRIUMF has an opening for a Research
Associate to participate in experimental studies of kaon decays. E787
at BNL has reported evidence for especially interesting rare decays,

experiment at Fermilab. D0 is currently undergoing
a major upgrade and will begin a new extended run next year.=20
The UTA group is involved in several aspects of D0 including
the construction of a new Forward Proton Detector (FPD).=20
The FPD consists of small scintillating fiber=20
detectors located in Roman pots, which allow the detectors
to be placed very close to the beam for measuring diffractively=20
scattered protons and anti-protons. The FPD will allow unprecedented=20
measurements of recently discovered hard diffractive processes. =20
The new postdoc would be expected to play a major role in the=20
construction and commissioning of this new detector as well as=20
participate in the analysis of data from the pending run.
A Ph. D. in particle physics is required with preference given
to applicants with a strong interest in both hardware and software.

The High Energy Physics Group at Imperial College is actively involved in
experiments at accelerator laboratories around the world and has an
extensive research and development programme for new detector technologies.
We are currently looking for a Design Draughtsperson / Engineer to join a
small team which gives engineering support in detector design and
manufacture. The candidate is expected to provide good design skills and
innovative ideas, and be able to follow these through to construction and
commissioning. He/she will work in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers,
applied physicists and technical staff from the Blackett Laboratory group
and other institutes both from the UK and abroad. Computer literacy and a
good understanding of CAD are important, as is a willingness to work abroad
if required. Experience in any of the following areas: FEA methods, gas
and/or vacuum equipment and precision alignment systems would be an
advantage. The successful applicant is likely to be a graduate engineer or
to have a HNC/HND or equivalent design experience.
This will be a three year fixed term contract with the possibility of
extension. Salary, inclusive of London weighting, will be on either the
University ORS or technical scales in the range 17869 to 25785 pounds,
depending on age and experience. Appointment at a higher grade may be
considered for particularly well qualified candidates. The starting date,
although flexible, is nominally in October 1999.

Research Associate in Experimental Particle Physics
The High Energy Physics group at the Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College,
London, has a vacancy for a Research Associate to work on the ZEUS experime=
nt.
This new, PPARC-funded position is available from October 1999 for three=20
years. =20
The group at Imperial is making a major contribution to the analysis of=20
charged and neutral current deep inelastic scattering at the highest
possible Q**2. A substantial upgrade to the HERA facility at DESY is=20
underway; this will provide both a large increase in luminosity and a=20
polarised lepton beam from the start of running in 2001. The measurement=20
of the polarisation dependence of deep inelastic scattering at high Q**2=20
will form a unique and important contribution to the understanding of=20
parity violation in the Standard Model. The determination of the degree=20
of lepton beam polarisation is of primary importance in this programme=20
and we are working with the machine physicists and members of other=20
experimental groups at DESY to prepare an upgraded polarimeter for HERA.=20
The successful applicant will be expected to take a key role in the
development, installation and commissioning of the upgraded polarimeter.
Following on from this, he/she will be expected to make a major
contribution to the first measurement of the high Q**2 deep inelastic
scattering cross sections using polarised lepton beams. The candidate will
have the opportunity to make regular, extended trips to DESY. We are lookin=

Physicist/Computer Scientist for the Introduction of OO Technologies
The two Colliding Beam Detector Collaborations, H1 and ZEUS, at DESY are
developing new methods and tools to handle the increased data volume
expected from the Luminosity Upgrade of the HERA ep collider after the year
2000. The two collaborations plan to perform major parts of the physics
analysis using Object-Oriented Technologies. In a pilot project a common
data format for the two experiments is to be defined and the necessary data
analysis environment to be developed. The project team comprises members of
both collaborations and of the central computing support group at DESY.
The two experiments H1 and ZEUS and the central computing support group at
DESY are looking for highly motivated individuals to participate in this
project.People interested should
have successfully completed a Ph.D. in Physics or Computer Science,
have an interest in problems related to the handling and analysis of data
samples in the multi-TeraByte range,
have experience or be interested in Object-Oriented Programming
Technologies,
be willing to work closely together in a team consisting of Physicists and
Computer Scientists.
The appointment will be at DESY in Hamburg and be initially limited to 3

POSTDOC POSITION AVAILABLE with WISCONSIN on CMS
The Experimental High Energy Physics Group at the University of
Wisconsin - Madison is seeking applicants to fill a post
doctoral research position to work on the level 1 calorimeter
trigger for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment to be
built at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The position
could also involve participation in and data analysis for the
Zeus experiment at the HERA ep collider at DESY.
The Wisconsin group has overall responsibility for the CMS
Trigger Project and is specifically responsible for building the
Level 1 Regional Calorimeter Trigger. This system consists of 19
crates of 160 MHz electronics boards and ASICs that will process
3 Terabits/second of electromagnetic and hadronic trigger tower
sums from the calorimeter front end electronics and produce
information on electrons, photons, jets, and energy sums in
about 300 nsec for transmission to the global calorimeter
trigger.
The successful candidate would work on the physics simulation of
the CMS level 1 calorimeter trigger, provide software support for
the calorimeter trigger hardware tests, assist engineering staff
in hardware tests and work on the integration effort with the
calorimeter front end electronics and global calorimeter trigger
systems.
The postdoc would work with the Wisconsin group in Madison with
occasional trips to CERN and other CMS Institutes as required.
The initial appointment is renewable annually for a period of 3
years subject to mutual satisfaction. This position is available
immediately.

NIKHEF has an opening for a postdoc position for an experimental
physicist in the ZEUS experiment at the electron-proton collider
HERA in DESY (Hambourg).
The NIKHEF group carries responsabilities for the calorimeter readout,
and the second level trigger; the group is strongly involved
in the construction of the silicon microvertex detector, which
is foreseen to be installed in ZEUS by the second half of the year 2000
at the time of the HERA upgrade.
Members of the NIKHEF group participate in the data analysis, with
emphasis on the analysis of deep inelastic scattering events.
The successful candidate will be offered the opportunity to
participate in the physics analysis and the final construction
phase and commisioning of the microvertex detector (hardware and/or
software wise).=20
He/she is expected to contribute in the maintenance tasks of the detector
in particular the overall second level trigger, which includes the
implementation and checking of physics filter programs running on
the online system.
The candidate will be offered a two year contract,
renewable by one year and will be resident at DESY for the greater part
of the contract period.
