The Fermilab computing division, CMS Department, has an immediate opening
for a Computing Professional VI working on the CMS experiment.
The person who fills this position will be responsible for
development, integration and support of physics reconstruction and
analysis software and software tools for distributed computing for
the CMS experiment at CERN. Fermilab is planning to build a
substantial user facility for CMS for reconstructing and analyzing
raw data and Monte Carlo. This will most likely be the largest
such computing center in the US for CMS and will be the central place
for US-CMS physicists to analyze data.
The position will involve installing CMS collaboration software packages
from CERN onto Fermilab computers, making required modifications to adapt
to the Fermilab environment, developing and running test suites to
authenticate the functionality of the software, and to work with and
instruct local physicists in the use of the software. The successful
candidate will also collaborate on development of common CMS software
tools to be used throughout the collaboration.
In addition, this position will contribute to an LHC wide group
studying models of distributed computing architectures for future
HEP experiments, and have a significant input into the architecture
and design of the Fermilab CMS computing facility.
Applicants should have a strong background in UNIX and C++.
A Masters Degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Computer Science,
High Energy Physics or a related field is required.

DUTIES: Essential - The ATLAS Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory (LBNL) has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral candidate
in experimental High Energy Physics. The LBNL group is part of the ATLAS
Collaboration, building one of the two large experiments at the CERN Large
Hadron Collider. The LBNL group is engaged in the design and construction of
the ATLAS silicon strip and pixel trackers. Participate initially in the design
and fabrication of the pixel tracker systems. Take a major role in the
acquisition and analysis of laboratory and test beam data for prototypes of
the pixel system.
QUALIFICATIONS: Essential - Experience in the area of silicon detector or

Experimental High Energy Physics
The particle physics group at TRIUMF has an opening for a Research
Associate to participate in experimental studies of kaon decays. E787
at BNL has reported evidence for especially interesting rare decays,
and the data set will be greatly expanded during the next few years
using an upgraded detector. The group is also developing new
experiments and is involved in advanced detector and electronics R&D

The High Energy Physics group at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid has
an immediate opening for a postdoctoral position. The group is a member
of the ATLAS collaboration.
With the new position it is desired to expand our role in the construction,
calibration and beam tests of the ATLAS Liquid-Argon Electromagnetic Endcap
Calorimeter. You will be an outstanding applicant with experience in
Experimental Particle Physics and/or detector development who has, or is
about to obtain, a PhD. The post is based in Madrid but is likely to involve
periods of work at the CERN laboratory, Geneva.

Design Draughtsperson / Engineer
The High Energy Physics Group at Imperial College is actively involved in
experiments at accelerator laboratories around the world and has an
extensive research and development programme for new detector technologies.
We are currently looking for a Design Draughtsperson / Engineer to join a
small team which gives engineering support in detector design and
manufacture. The candidate is expected to provide good design skills and
innovative ideas, and be able to follow these through to construction and
commissioning. He/she will work in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers,
applied physicists and technical staff from the Blackett Laboratory group
and other institutes both from the UK and abroad. Computer literacy and a
good understanding of CAD are important, as is a willingness to work abroad
if required. Experience in any of the following areas: FEA methods, gas
and/or vacuum equipment and precision alignment systems would be an
advantage. The successful applicant is likely to be a graduate engineer or
to have a HNC/HND or equivalent design experience.
This will be a three year fixed term contract with the possibility of
extension. Salary, inclusive of London weighting, will be on either the
University ORS or technical scales in the range 17869 to 25785 pounds,
depending on age and experience. Appointment at a higher grade may be
considered for particularly well qualified candidates. The starting date,
although flexible, is nominally in October 1999.
