Scientific Program: The motivation and aim of this Workshop is to foster the flourishing of science at interfaces between fields, where methods in one field are used for the problems of the other fields and vice versa, having in mind the need to strengthen the fields which are "in between". The Workshop covers an area - that of nanotubes and nanostructures - of overlap between field theory and statistical mechanics, with important consequences also for the study of condensed matter physics. Topics that will be covered are listed below: - Theoretical and experimental aspects of nanotubes - Self-organizing quantum dots, quantum wires and their electronic and magnetic properties - Coupled dots and arrays of dots - Nanocomposites - Electronic, magnetic, optical and transport properties of nanostructures - Techniques of nanofabrication - Characterization techniques of nanotubes and nanostructures - Applications of nanotubes and nanostructures - Physical properties of two-dimensional systems - Effects of nanotechnologies on microorganisms The Workshop is a follow-up of the School and Workshop Nanotubes & Nanostructures 2000, S. Margherita di Pula (Cagliari, Sardinia) 24.9.2000-4.10.2000 and the School and Workshop Nanotubes & Nanostructures 2001 INFN-LNF 18-27 October 2001, which were attended by a fair number of students (about 75 participants to N&N2000 and 60 to N&N2001) and sponsorships from various scientific Institutions (please see the web sites for details http://wwwsis.lnf.infn.it/nn2000/Welcome.html, http://wwwsis.lnf.infn.it/nn2001/Welcome.html), which allowed us to help financially about one-third of the participants to both past editions. We wish to encourage also in 2002 students, who learned the basics of the topics of the Schools in 2000 and 2001, to participate in our School and Workshop in 2001, dealing with the most recent developments in the field. The proposed location is the homesite of the DAPHNE-LIGHT facility, what makes it especially suitable for synchrotron radiation experimental activity in the IR and XRD. It also has a well-established tradition in hosting international scientific events.
The School Program 23 - 26 September Lecturers who have already confirmed their lectures at the School include: L. Balents (U.C. Santa Barbara, USA) M. Bockrath (Harvard Univ., USA) (to be confirmed) J. Chevrier (LEPES Grenoble, France) P. Gambardella (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland) A. Hernando (Univ. Complutense, Madrid, Spain) H. Postma (Delft Univ., The Netherlands) U. Valbusa (Univ. Genova, Italy) B. Voigtlaender (Juelich, Germany)
We intend to prepare a volume with the written contributions from the speakers, to be distributed to participants, as we did in the previous editions of the Conference. We intend, if possible with the resources available, to offer fellowships covering board and lodging for 20 doctorate students and young postdocs, giving preference to disadvantaged areas of Europe and associated Countries.
Call for Contributions at theWorkshop 26 - 28 September Contributions are welcome in the above mentioned topics. About 20 oral presentations, including a few invited talks are foreseen, as well as a poster session. Poster sessions will be held during extended coffee breaks on Thursday 26th afternoon and Friday 27th. In order to allow us to ready a booklet, to be distributed upon arrival to the participants, all lecturers at the School, as well as all speakers at the Workshop, are kindly yet firmly requested to send their written-up contributions (lectures and talks), before September, 10 2002 to nn2002@lnf.infn.it In addition we are planning to make transparencies available, on the web, to participants (to be linked after the corresponding talk). Therefore both lecturers and speakers are requested to please send files with their slides to nn2002@lnf.infn.it, by September 10th (or to mail a xerox copy, possibly in colors, by September 1st to S. Colasanti INFN-LNF P.O. Box 13, 00044 Frascati, Italy). Abstracts, one page in A4 format, are due on May 15th. To submit an abstract you are invited to send it by e-mail to nn2002@lnf.infn.it. In the abstract please indicate your preference for oral or poster presentation. A selection based on abstracts will be made by the organizing and advisory committees. Acceptance will be communicated on June 1st. Publication of the proceedings in an international journal is foreseen. The format and layout instructions will be provided by the publisher of the proceedings.
