Synchrotron-SOLEIL (www.synchrotron-soleil.fr) is a new synchrotron radiation facility which is under construction at Saint Aubin (Essonne) close to Paris. The third generation 2.75 GeV electron storage ring SOLEIL will be a high brilliance source from the far infrared to X-rays, with extremely stable beams. 11 beamlines will be open in 2006. In total, 24 beamlines on bending magnets or insertion devices will be operational in 2010 for physics, chemistry, material sciences, life sciences, earth sciences and environmental studies. 350 permanent staff, working for experiments, sources, technical support, computing and administration divisions, will contribute to the company for servicing outside users and internal research. The non-permanent staff will comprise around 50 students in PhD or PostDoctoral positions.

The life sciences program will be supported on at least 9 totally or partially dedicated beamlines : biocristallography on PROXIMA I and II ; SAXS/WAXS/GISAXS on SWIN ; BIOXAS on SAMBA, PROXIMA I and LUCIA ; VUV spectroscopies on DISCO with three branches (circular dichroism, mass spectrometry with selective photoionisation and fluorescence confocal microscopy with time resolution) ; IR microspectroscopy in mid-IR on SMIS ; far IR spectroscopy on AILES. Finally, a soft XRays microscopy beamline project is under discussion.

A biochemistry laboratory (90 m2) located inside the synchrotron building will complement those beamlines. It will include equipments allowing the preparation and characterization of biological samples (proteins, DNA and more generally, biomolecules, fluids and cells) studied on the beamlines. The laboratory will be used for internal researches (SOLEIL staff and associated researchers) and as support laboratory for outside users coming to SOLEIL outside users.
