The DASIM Special Support Activity has been funded by EU Contract Number 005326 under the European Union Framework 6, in order to further explore and advance the diagnostic possibilities of infrared microspectroscopy and imaging using the European synchrotron radiation facilities.
Main aim of the project is to coordinate research efforts by networking the existing centres of excellence on the European scale and adding further necessary multidisciplinary expertise for this purpose.

The first DASIM meeting organized at Daresbury in July 2005, triggered the activity presenting the capabilities of synchrotrons and other technology and the needs of the clinical environment covering screening, diagnosis, surgery, post operative investigation and therapeutics.
Contributions about diagnostic applications of FTIR from teams already working on clinical problems through the use of spectroscopic tools have been presented by DASIM members and invited experts from non European countries. Working Parties have been started at Daresbury to identify and study the key issues of the different research areas.
Existing cooperations between teams of biologists, clinicians and synchrotron scientists are making continuous progresses in IR microspectroscopy and the 2nd meeting will be the natural continuation of this forum, with the purpose of highlighting the specific issues, e.g., understanding the key advantages of synchrotron based instruments, coordination of the on going researches, standardization of the methods, support to new research teams, etc.
The workshop will represent also the opportunity to present the status of the European IR synchrotron facilities in this area, of the existing research projects and stimulate broad international collaborations.

Chairman

Augusto Marcelli      (INFN-LNF)

Local Organizing Committee:

    Mariangela Cestelli Guidi (INFN-LNF)
    Vitaliano Chiarella (INFN-LNF)
Massimo Piccinini (University of Roma Tre & INFN-LNF)

International Programme Committee:

Marco Colombatti (University of Verona)
Sheila Fischer (University of Leeds)
Peter Lasch (RKI - Berlin)
Michel Manfait (University of Reims)
David Moss (ANKA Karlsruhe)
Ganesh Sockalingum (University of Reims)

Venue:

The Workshop will be held at the Frascati National Laboratories (LNF) of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN). Frascati is located 20 km south-east of Rome and about 40 km west of "Fiumicino" Airport. The Frascati National Laboratories are about 2 km from the center of Frascati.
The LNF is the largest Italian laboratory founded in 1955, when the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN - Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) decided to build a synchrotron for electrons. The synchrotron was completed in 1958 and went into operation in February 1959. It hosted since the 1960 the early Italian experiments with "Synchrotron Radiation" in the framework of an Italian and French cooperation.
Sessions will be held in the Auditorium "Bruno Touschek" located in the High Energy building (Building n. 36 of the LNF map). Attendees will have at their disposal a Computer Room in the same building. A wireless ethernet connectivity is available (standard IEEE 802.11b). For further informations about how to get the Laboratories, please click here.

Costs and Support:

The DASIM Special Support Activity will provide travel and accommodation costs for all DASIM members and additional invited speakers attending the meeting. Travel costs will be reimbursed after the meeting. To allow the largest attendance we ask to all members to use the most economical route available.

To help the organization, all DASIM members are invited to register as soon as possible. The participation to the workshop is free also to non-DASIM members and we invite all scientists interested to submit contributions. All partecipants have to register in advance. The fee for non-DASIM members including the workshop materials, the lunches, the coffe-breaks and the social dinner is 250 €. Students can applfor a reduced fee submitting their curriculum vitae to the secretariat of the workshop.

Accommodation:

Delegates will have rooms reserved in the Grand Hotel Villa Tuscolana/La Rufinella near Frascati. Please use the registration form to indicate for which nights you will require accommodation and in particular if you have specific requirements.
Non-DASIM members should arrange their own accommodation contacting the Hotel directly. An extensive list of Hotels in the area can be found here. We suggest you to make your reservation as soon as possible in order to be sure to get the accommodation.

Registration:

The registration form can be found here. For further enquiries, please contact the secretariat or the chairman of the workshop.
