/details in Abstracts & Program/

The international conference “Channeling - Charged and Neutral Particles Channeling Phenomena” organized by the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) in collaboration with Italian and other world centres and research initiatives for the eighth time is devoted to the common discussion on advances in physics of coherent/incoherent interaction of relativistic and nonrelativistic hadrons and leptons (protons, ions, electrons, muons and related antiparticles) in strong electromagnetic fields of various origins and structures, from solid amorphous and crystalline to laser and plasma based ones. The topics of the Channeling meetings have been extended to include also the interaction of radiations and beams (wide broad electromagnetic radiations, atoms and neutrons) in various structured media as well as meta-materials to be investigated at the channeling physics approach. One of the main application of the physics of beams channeling relates to the future accelerators, storage rings and radiation optics projects, and it is known as charged and neutral beams novel manipulation techniques, i.e. shaping - collimation and deflection, and acceleration. Recent studies have shown the feasibility of the channeling phenomenology application for description of other mechanisms of interaction of both charged and neutral particle beams in solids, plasmas and external electromagnetic fields covering the research areas from crystal and capillary based accelerators, undulators, waveguides, and X-ray/neutron optical elements.

The conference subjects cover basic theoretical and experimental research aspects together with several well-known techniques for applications in scientific instrumentation both for large-scale experiments at famous accelerator centres and for laboratory table-top studies. Last editions of the Channeling meetings are being organized by INFN together with CERN - the European Organization for Nuclear Research, and MEPhI - the National  Research Nuclear University, where intense studies on interaction of relativistic particles interactions in crystals have been performing since long time.

Previous editions of the “Channeling” conferences, starting from Channeling 2004 and Channeling 2006 held at the National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF) and followed by Channeling 2008 (Erice), Channeling 2010 (Ferrara), and Channeling 2012 (Alghero) have demonstrated a growing interest of the researchers involved in continuosly reinforced collaboration programs, some of which boasts more than 35 years of history. Channeling 2014 (Capri) and Channeling 2016 (Sirmione-Desenzano del Garda) have defined by more than 200 presentations for each one, including invited lectures as well as oral and poster reports, by the researchers representing 19-20 countries from Europe, America and Asia.

Since the first Channeling meeting we have prepared 11 books/special volumes of proceedings. The proceedings of the Frascati conferences were published by SPIE - the International Society for Optical Engineering (Proc. of SPIE, Vol. 5974 and Vol. 6634), those of the Erice meeting - by World Scientific as a special issue of "The Science and Culture Series - Physics". The Channeling 2010 proceedings were published by the Italian Physical Society as a special volume of Nuovo Cimento C, as well as, separately, in form of a book "Channeling 2010" (SIF). The main contributions to Channeling 2012, 2014 and 2016 have been issued as dedicated volumes of Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms (Vols. 309, 355, 402), and, in addition, as books entitled "Channeling 2012" (MEPhI) and "Channeling 2014" (MEPhI), respectively. Some of the aforementioned books were devoted to the memories of Hans A. Bethe, Mikhail L. Ter-Mikaelyan, Jens Lindhard, Vitaly L. Ginzburg, Vladimir N. Baier, Giordano Diambrini Palazzi, Muradin Kumakhov, respectively, who in the past strongly contributed to the research in some specific branches of the physics of beam interactions in intense electromagnetic fields, delivering new ideas and knowledge to the community.

The "Channeling" conference represents a tantalizing opportunity for a wide interdisciplinary community interested to know present and future research projects in the field of relativistic/nonrelativistic beams, radiations interaction in solids as well as radiation fluxes and beams propagation in micro- and nano-channel structures. These conference series are the milestone for the experts and young scientists looking for uptodate researches regarding the next generation of accelerators and photon sources and represents the best opportunity not only to know but also to contribute to the latest international initiatives in the beams shaping/penetration field, e.g., channeling of beams/radiations and related studies.

To push and enhance at most the participation to Channeling 2018 the Advisory, Programme and Organizing Committees strongly encourage the participations and the presentations of young colleagues, postdocs, PhD students , postgraduate/undergraduate students.

The conference scientific program will include invited talks, oral and poster presentations and selected round tables. The organisation of the event and the program will foresee and stimulate any kind of formal and informal discussion.
