New methodologies of biological dosimetry applied to human protection

It is demonstrated how "in vitro" radiobiological and chemobiological studies using cytogenetic methods (chromosomal aberrations and micronuclei) on human lymphocytes from healthy subjects and individuals undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy, as well as on lymphocytes of mammals other than man (comparative cytogenetics), can help to increase the basic radiobiological and chemiobiological scientific information.

Such information gives a valid contribution to understanding of the action of ionizing radiation or pharmaceuticals on cells and, in return, can be of value to human radioprotection and chemoprotection.

Cytogenetic studies can be summarized as follows:

1. biodosimetry (estimate of dose received after accidental events);
2. individual radiosensitivity (level of individual response);
3. clinical radiobiology and chemiobiology (individual response to radiopharmaceuticals, to radiotherapy and chemopharmaceuticals);
4. comparative radiobiology (cytogenetic studies on species other than man); e) animal model in the environmental surveillance.

TRAVEL:

Frascati can be reached from Roma-Fiumicino "Leonardo da Vinci" Airport and/or from Termini Central Railway Station by public transportation.

Participants arriving by plane:

• From "Leonardo da Vinci" Airport to "Roma Termini" central railway station: Departures to Termini from 7:50 am to 10:05 pm.
  Trains nearly every hour, traveling time 35 minutes
  Tickets are available at the Airport Station at the cost of 13,000 Lit.
  At Termini Station connections to Underground lines "A" and "B"
• From "Leonardo da Vinci" Airport to "Roma Tiburtina" railway station: Departures to "Roma Tiburtina" every 20 minutes from 6:15 am to 11:00 pm.
  traveling times 45 minutes.
  Tickets cost 7.000 lit.
  Connections to Underground lines "B"
• Taxi fare (yellow or white licensed cabs strongly advised) from Airport to Frascati amounts approximately to 100,000 Lit.

Participants arriving by train:

• Frascati can be conveniently reached by train from the Termini central railway station in Rome.
• Alternatively, take the subway (A line) to Anagnina, and then the CO.TRAL bus (blue buses) to Frascati.
• Taxi fare (yellow or white licensed cabs) from Termini to Frascati amounts approximately to 80,000 Lit.
