How to read mail from outside of LNF using SSH and IMAP from Win95-98-NT clients
If you use an ISP (Internet Service Provider) from home or work outside of LNF and need to read mail this is the software you need:
- Download, install and configure SSH Client for Windows 95-98-NT
- Download and install Netscape
- Run TTSH and connect to a SSH Server (dxcalc will be used in this example, but you can use any SSH server within LNF)
- click on Edit menu and then on SSH Forwarding
- click on Add
- click on Forward local port list and select imap, in remote machine insert imap.lnf.infn.it (because we need to connect to IMAP Server) and on port select imap again. Now click on OK
- now a screnn appears that informs you which ports are forwarded, click on OK and leave the connection on dxcalc opened, this is necessary to have IMAP working
- To configure your Netscape to use IMAP Mail Server using SSH, you need to:
- Run Netscape and click on Edit then Preferences
- now find Mail & Newsgroups preferences and click on Identity, insert Your name and Email-address
- now click on Mail Servers preferences, insert your isp smtp for Outgoing mail (SMTP) Server and insert your user name account on isp
- then click on Add and insert 127.0.0.1 in Server Name and your UNIX username (on dxcalc) in User Name
- now click on Advanced and insert the folder where mails will reside on the unix machine (normally mail/, then click on OK and again click on OK
- IMPORTANT: Now your Netscape is ready to work with IMAP but you need to exit from netscape and restart it to have all working
NOTE: You can use any SSH server within LNF to do this, the only thing you need is replacing dxcalc entries in this example with the hostname of SSH server you want to use
